New gen CE market segment estimates
• Estimates are made for the 2008-2012 period.
• Monetary sums do not include tax and are given in euros.
• Estimates are carried out individually for Western Europe, the USA and Japan.
• Estimates relate to the annual sales achieved by manufacturers to retailers.
• Estimates relate to the following CE sectors:
- TV displays (made up of cathode-ray tubes, LCD flat panels, plasma flat panels, front projection and OLEDe - organic light-emitting diodes),
- Cable set-top boxes,
- Satellite set-top boxes,
- Terrestrial set-top boxes (pay TV and free-to-air),
- IPTV set-top boxes. IPTV set-top boxes are only considered when used to watch TV. In other words, the number of IPTV users is assessed, and not the number of IPTV-equipped
homes. This note is only relevant to IPTV STBs.

The methodology adopted was as follows for each segment:
- Estimate of the annual sales of CE equipment by manufacturers to retailers, including an estimate of annual new sales and an estimate of the annual equipment renewal level.
- Estimate of internet connection penetration by CE device category.
- Estimate of volume of devices sold that can connect to the internet.
- Estimate of annual average price of CE equipment.
- Market value assessment by territory of devices sold that can be connected to the internet.
- Calculation of the development of the market share of each web-connected CE device category, relating to the global web-connected CE market.
- Calculation of the geographic distribution of the web-connected CE market by CE device category.
