A New Deal for S@TCOM Satellite and Terrestrial Cooperation

Deregulation, globalisation, digitization, new services. Over the last few years, the telecommunications sector has been marked by major changes.

There are three main reasons for this:

• The economy of the sector has been radically transformed,
• Digitization has led to increasing convergence of complementary technologies,
• Production, exchange and social interactions rely on communication systems and services more and more every day.

In the field of satellite telecommunications, competition has become more intense, in particular due to terrestrial telecommunication technologies encroaching on the television distribution market, previously a preferred market for satellite-based services.
Satellites have also gone through changes, offering a larger range of services and applications to individuals, businesses and public institutions. Due to technological evolutions and new service offers, satellites are now essential players in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

The best examples include new television services (HD, 3D), high-speed internet access by satellites to reduce the digital divide, digital radio services, broadband and television services for mobility, and Location Based Services (LBS).
The entire telecommunications industry, terrestrial and satellite, is at a crossroad today.

In order to respond to this ever-increasing demand for new services, complementarity and cooperation between the terrestrial and satellite sectors has intensified. This symposium will deal with the new growth opportunities for satellites in electronic communications, by identifying the main challenges that satellite operators must now meet, and the strengths they can take advantage of to position themselves efficiently in the various markets. It will cover the complementarity of satellite and terrestrial technologies for access to new digital services, in particular, new services for mobility and Location Based Services (LBS), but also for all aspects of digital services at home, notably Internet and television.

The «Digital Home» will be one of the key stakes in the coming years.
